Illustration of how a seasoned tradeline changes a file — not a promise of any score. Results depend on your file.

The basics

How dotradelineswork?

What is a tradeline?

Any account on a credit report is a tradeline. Here it means a seasoned credit card with years of clean history and a high limit. The cardholder adds you as an authorized user, and that account’s history can appear on your report. You get no card and cannot spend — you get the history.

What does it help with?

  • Utilization — a high limit with a low balance lowers your balances-to-limits ratio.
  • Age — an account opened years ago raises your average account age and can become your oldest account.
  • Profile depth — a thin file gains a real, long-running revolving account from a major bank.

Does adding more than one help more?

Often, yes — when they do different jobs. One aged line for age, one high-limit line for utilization. Two or three well-chosen lines usually do more than five that are neither. Stacking similar young lines adds little. The calculator maths is simple: every line changes your total limit and average age — what a scoring model does with that is up to the model.
